On Friday 15 May 2026, De La Salle Holy Cross College celebrated a significant milestone as the College marked both the Founder’s Day of St John Baptist De La Salle and the 40th Anniversary of the Amalgamation between De La Salle College and Holy Cross Convent.
Addressing pupils, staff, alumni, parents and distinguished guests during the College’s Founder’s Day and 40th Anniversary of the Amalgamation celebrations, College Principal Neil Berndsen reflected on the history, identity and enduring legacy of the school and its community.
The celebration welcomed His Eminence Stephen Cardinal Brislin, Father Vusi, Father Tony, Father Mosoeu, Reverend Deacon Patrick de La Roche, Brother Gabriel, Sister Cheryl-Anne, Sister Flora, representatives of the Holy Cross Sisters, Ms Debbie Harris, Chairperson of the DLSHCC Board of Governors, members of the Catholic Schools Office, ISASA, alumni, Tsholofelo community and supporters of the College. The occasion honoured not only four decades of the co-educational partnership, but also the values and traditions that continue to shape the College today.
In his address, Mr Berndsen highlighted the courage, compromise and faith that led to the amalgamation of the two schools in 1986, describing it as a powerful example of community and shared purpose.
“Through prayer, discernment, courage and trust in God’s providence, the Holy Cross Sisters and the De La Salle Brothers believed that coming together would better serve the community, their mission and ultimately, Our Lord,” he said.
Mr Berndsen encouraged pupils to reflect on the meaning behind the College’s name and the legacy they hope to leave behind. He reminded the school community that traditions, faith and service remain central to the identity of the College.
“The real measure of influence is whether your impact remains long after you are gone,” said Mr Berndsen, as he challenged pupils to pursue lives of purpose, faith and meaningful service to others.
The celebrations included a special Holy Mass, moments of remembrance for past members of the school community, musical performances and a One College assembly focused on the story and spirit behind the name De La Salle Holy Cross College.
The anniversary forms part of a year-long programme of celebrations commemorating 40 years of the partnership between the Lasallian and Holy Cross traditions, which continue to guide the College’s mission of holistic Catholic education.
